Day 11: Symbols

"Language is a source of misunderstanding." McLuhan, 1964

We bridge gaps with the communicative ability of language; however, there are times when language becomes an impediment to our connectivity, when the words, the signs and the symbols we use bring us further apart. Take for an example the case of language barriers. The difference in the words used results in misinterpretation. Here, we do not rely on language. Rather, we communicate through shared culture.

Does the user’s/audience’s own background or experience affect the interpretation of messages? How?

I believe that we take everything in subjectively; there is no 100% objective view on things. We make interpretations based on the breadth of our knowledge, our capacity, and culture.

Is it possible that a different individual derives a different meaning from the message? Explain.

We see this all the time. At times, it could be misinterpretation. Most of the time, however, instances such as these are based on our own interpretations.

What information codes, conventions and messages about our country is communicated through advertisements?

From my experience, messages communicated through advertisements are the ones about products and services companies have to offer to the public.

If you are to create a postcard for a place or organization of your choice, what technical and symbolic codes would you use to convey important information and create the desired impression? Why?

I think I'd use popular culture references. We are so immersed in the virtual world and social media that 'special' messages are recognized by almost everyone now.

How is understanding of the technical and symbolic codes contribute to media and information literacy?

By understanding the technical and symbolic codes, we make ourselves more knowledgeable of the world around us. Isn't that the true goal of media and information literacy.
